SMOOTH. Your skin, your feed, your life, optimized, smooth, already resolved. At some point this happened. You didn't notice. You don't know what it cost. SMOOTH is an exhibition by UBERMORGEN. Three rooms. UGLY. The infrastructure underneath, the body held, the screen that already looked for you. Everything here is fine. You can leave now. Everything is handled.

SMOOTH. UGLY.
You know the lag everyone's been getting in the mornings, this revolting feeling. The way your photos load a little warm, the stuff still running after you close it, the buildup, the residue, the heat. SMOOTH. That's all up there now, getting painted over, still wet, dripping. But that's normal. Yours is mostly fine anyway. By the time you look up it's all white, but it's quiet. UGLY · You're cleared. You can leave now. It's all  handled.

You know how you've been getting everything a little late. The thing everyone saw before you, the reference you missed, whatever you kept checking for and forgot. Everyone's a few days behind themselves now. Yours is mostly closed. It's all here, on the floor, sorted, the looking already done, you just walk through and take it in. SMOOTH. You don't reach, you look down and they're on. Nothing behind them, nothing after them. UGLY · You didn't miss anything. It's already in you. You can leave now. It's all  handled.

You can leave now. It's all handled.

These five clips are not portraits but samples of performance: a hand raised open toward you, a phone held to the cheek, a spoon at a wide-open mouth, a hand covering the lips, a finger pointed directly at you — each gesture isolated, sanded smooth, looping with no beginning and no end. They were made for an audience that doesn't quite look back — a platform, an algorithm, the billionaire who happens to own it — and now they just rehearse being watched, alone, in a rectangle of light. Everything here is offered. Nothing is exchanged.

Hall 4 · The Social Screening
Hall 4 is a soft room. A white carpet covers the floor, deep enough to take a photograph in, the kind of carpet built for sitting, lying down, staying a while. Around the edges, low against the walls, the screens start just above the floor and keep going. Each one holds a single person. No place behind them, no one beside them, nothing to explain who they are or why they're smiling. They are the residents of SMOOTH: optimized, calm, endlessly pleasant, rehearsing being looked at long after anyone stopped looking. You lie down. They keep performing. Nobody minds. Everything here is fine.

Context
In a world this smooth, where do all the emotions go?

Look at the faces. The MAGA face. The podcast bro mid-monologue. The founder on his fourth espresso explaining why sleep is a bug. Now look at the surfaces they move through. Post-beige Chinese infrastructure, airport calm, server-room quiet, the whole palette a neo-Biedermeier dog-whistle. Optimized until there is nothing left to optimize. This is SMOOTH. It is the default state now, the frictionless existence Silicon Valley promised and then shipped to everyone, everywhere, all at once. You already wanted this. Is it the tech or is it the vibe? Chicken and egg. The tech makes the vibe, the product makes the vibe, and the vibe is so boring it loops.

SMOOTH is supposed to feel like winning. No lag, no friction, no rough edges. You want the thing, the thing arrives. But friction was where the feeling lived. Anger needs an obstacle. Excitement needs a wall to push against. Joy, disgust, grief, all of it needs something with a texture. Sand the world down to a delivery surface and the emotions have nowhere to land.

So where do they go? They do not disappear. They leak. They surface as the most brutal comment section on earth, as micro-aggression so over the top you cannot tell if it is a threat or a punchline, as bullying engineered for maximum reach. And even then it comes out smooth. Smooth anger on Instagram. You can do something disgusting today and the interface still renders it as a clean tile, frictionless, public, distributed. You type the rage and feel no resistance. People raised on optimization are starving to feel something, so they manufacture friction by hand, in public, at scale. The emotions are real and they still collide, but in a parasocial society they come out flat, because the manufactured part is the part that flattens them. The emotion has to go somewhere. It always does.

This is UGLY. Not the opposite of SMOOTH, but the thing SMOOTH is built on top of and pretends it deleted. UGLY is the infrastructure bleeding through, the substrate nobody chose, the white paint dripping down the retired server. FOUNDATIONISM is the name for this move. Art does not produce the smooth surface, it consumes it, and the value migrates downward, to the authorless layer underneath. The wires. The cooling. The labor. The thing the interface was built to make you forget. But the feeling did not move to the foundational layer, and it did not move to the application layer. It moved to the orchestration layer in between, the part that schedules, routes, and aligns what runs. That is where the content and the emotion live now — aligned, not felt. And UGLY has a next step. Call it DISGUSTY. The vibologist's bet is that you can still make friction by hand, that you can still be disgusting on purpose, and that not all of it smooths out.

The Bed of Sound room is emotion. The emotion is hope, or hope for emotion. That is where you still get to feel something.

Critical Essay

Large-model algorithms deploy probabilistic logic to erase the natural irregularities, imperfections, and semantic ambiguities of human language, manufacturing at the textual level a "smooth" surface that sands away the rough edges of humanity. What the algorithm shaves off in the process is something uniquely human: the subjective folds and wrinkles of language itself. The Austrian collective UBERMORGEN takes "smoothness" as the institutionalized manifestation of an ontological surface, following the paradigm shifts of post-human art philosophy to wedge technological frameworks — generative large models, neuro-symbolic computation, distributed blade server architectures, multimodal feature embedding, blockchain metadata authentication, CNN pixel filtering — into the folds where subjectivity has collapsed. Within the dialectical closed loop of human-machine mutual encroachment and symbiotic erosion, UBERMORGEN coolly dissects and reveals the fundamental paradox of technology and humanity locked in love and destruction beneath the smooth surface. From their early EKMRZ digital infiltration project and the Snowden archive installation through successive iterations, UBERMORGEN’s 2021 The Next Biennial Should be Curated by a Machine used machine learning architecture to extrapolate sixty-four parallel art universes. Between 2019 and 2023, their autonomous AI life form UNINVITED harvested vast quantities of closed-circuit surveillance sensor data, cultivating aberrant synthetic organisms and realizing pan-sensor image creation. The artists inherit the creative lineage of media hacking and digital activism, rejecting the Enlightenment illusion of technological neutrality, and shaping the algorithmically calibrated homogeneous smoothness into the most covert shell of contemporary subjective alienation. The three site-specific installations in the SMOOTH solo exhibition now landing at Box Art Museum, Songshan Lake, Dongguan — Suspended Servers, Bed of Sound, and Social Screening — are the concrete embodiments of this speculative logic.

Within the context of contemporary philosophy, the complete, human-centered construction of subjectivity born of modernism is gradually sliding toward the fragmented dissolution of the human subject in a post-human context. Smooth aesthetics have become the sensory disguise through which algorithmic ideology domesticates bodily perception. Transformer probabilistic tokenization smooths away the natural roughness of humanistic expression; AIGC gradient convergence dissolves the native irregularity of lived experience; platform data flows achieve total annexation of carbon-based life perception through seamless interaction. UBERMORGEN’s practice mounts a genealogical conceptual assault on this "tyranny of smoothness." Their early work Oldify used temporal pixel algorithms to falsify natural human faces and the markings of life, deploying excessively soft, smooth algorithmic imagery to pierce humanity’s primal attachment to the continuity of life and death. Their EKMRZ trilogy used crawler infiltration of the underlying databases of Google, Amazon, and eBay to tear open the data plunder and capital consumption lurking beneath the smooth consumer interface experience. In the exhibition space, Suspended Servers — retired blade servers suspended on white ropes with white paint dripping down them — uses the irregular patterns of manually dripped pigment to break the neat smoothness of industrial hardware and algorithmic computation; the floating installation Bed of Sound uses integrated embedded speakers to generate a warm sonic field, while low-frequency undercurrents continually rupture the auditory illusion of smoothness; Social Screening — multiple screens of varying sizes scattered in disorder, looping AI-generated images — dissolves through its dispersed arrangement the standardized smooth properties inherent to generated imagery. UBERMORGEN’s body of work, across the three dimensions of physical hardware, sonic field, and visual image, gives concrete form to the present reality of human-machine contest: smoothness is everywhere, and everywhere a crisis lies beneath.

Technology’s transgression against humanity is a covert internal consumption — the smooth surface devouring from within. The machine uses vast pre-trained corpora to simulate human emotion, compressing individual instinct and thought into quantified feature vectors; humanity’s counter-insurgency lies dormant in the blind spots of algorithmic logic. The artists, continuing their consistent hacker-mode practice, use poured liquid pigment, staggered sonic fields, and randomly positioned screens as deliberate noise to actively disrupt precise computational logic, tearing apart the perfect smooth order constructed by AI — resonating with the Eastern philosophical insight that "when things reach their extreme, they decline, which is called deviation from the Tao": the more technology tends toward ultimate smoothness and completeness, the closer it approaches the threshold of self-alienation and human backlash, drawing the human-machine entanglement into an existential paradox of mutual parasitism and mutual consumption. "Smooth" here is no longer the warm sensory quality of the surface, but an alienation metaphor for post-human existence: the more seamless and fluid the algorithmic optimization, the more it portends the layer-by-layer erosion of embodied subjectivity by silicon-based systems; the more frictionless the human-machine interaction, the more it reveals the prisoner’s dilemma in which the two are caught — loving and destroying each other in equal measure.

Through cross-medium, cross-computational, cross-virtual-and-physical integrated creation, UBERMORGEN transforms the iterative internal consumption of generative adversarial networks, the link loss of distributed networks, and the property rifts of NFT metaverses into visible artistic texture, puncturing the technological utopian dream constructed and woven by smooth aesthetics. In an era of continuous paradigm shifts in the philosophical core of art, the artists remain anchored to the primal existential predicament of human-machine coexistence and permanent rupture.

Artist

UBERMORGEN (超明天) is a two-generational multidiverse female-led Vienna-based art team: Billie Bernhard, lizvlx, Lola Mae, and Luzius Bernhard. The team operates across net art, media hacking, digital actionism, installation, AI systems, and speculative theory, with a 30-year institutional history.

Working directly with networks, corporations, algorithms, markets, and institutions, UBERMORGEN treats the infrastructures of contemporary power as artistic raw material, occupying, repurposing, and weaponizing political, economic, and technological systems. From Vote-Auction (2000) through the EKMRZ trilogy, the Snowden archive installation, The Next Biennial Should Be Curated by a Machine (2021), and the autonomous AI organism UNINVITED (2019–2023), UBERMORGEN consistently wedges artistic intelligence into the seams where systems reveal their contradictions.

SMOOTH is their first solo exhibition in mainland China. The work is hyper-contemporary and has always been.

Large language models use probability to smooth out the natural messiness and ambiguity of human language. They create a "smooth" surface in text, but in doing so, they also erase the unique, rough edges of human subjectivity… Algorithms can simulate a relationship, but cannot carry the responsibility within it; AI can simulate creation, but not the will behind it; large models can simulate judgment and predict outcomes, but cannot answer for the consequences. The machine achieves every smooth surface — but it has none of the fragility and imperfection that come with being human, none of the meaning that grows out of failure, none of the real cost a person pays. — Gu Zhenqing

About Artist

UBERMORGEN(超明日)是一个跨代际、多维度的女性主导维也纳艺术团体,成员包括 lizvlx(利兹弗尔克斯)、Luzius Bernhard(卢修斯・伯恩哈德)、Billie Bernhard(比莉・伯恩哈德)和 Lola Mae(洛拉・伯恩哈德)。

UBERMORGEN ('the day after tomorrow'), CH/AT/US, est. 1995. UBERMORGEN (超明天) is a two-generational multidiverse female-led Vienna-based art team: lizvlx, Luzius Bernhard, Billie Bernhard, and Lola Mae. The team operates across net art, conceptual art, media hacking, installation, online actionism, AI systems, and speculative theory, with a 30-year institutional history and hardcore underground legacy.

From Vote-Auction (2000) through the EKMRZ trilogy (2005–08), No Limit (2015), The Next Biennial Should Be Curated by a Machine (2021), the synthetic organism UNINVITED (2019–2025), PMC Wagner Arts (2023), and The Silver Singularity (2024), UBERMORGEN consistently wedges artistic intelligence into the seams where systems reveal their cosy & harsh contradictions.

Selected exhibitions: Liverpool Biennial, Whitney Museum, MoMA PS1, Centre Pompidou, Gwangju Biennale, Louvre Paris, Biennale of Sydney, SFMOMA, MOCA Taipei, ICA Miami, Serpentine Galleries, Kunsthal Aarhus, Chronus Shanghai, Museo Reina Sofía, Art Basel, New Museum, Somerset House, ZKM, Ars Electronica, ArtScience Singapore, 3331 Tokyo, ICC Tokyo.
